Called breast suspension by plastic surgeons, lifts are sometimes performed along with implant surgery to change both the shape and size of breasts. Basically a "droopy" breast has too much skin between the neck and the nipples. This extra skin is removed and the nipples are elevated, the breasts are reshaped and surgical incisions are closed. The amount of skin removed dictates the extent of the ultimate scars. However, if adequate breast volume is already present implants are not used. If increase in breast size is desired then prosthesis are needed. (See Breast Augmentation)

The surgery is performed in an outpatient setting under anesthesia. One may usually return to work in 4-5 days with limited chest muscle activity for one month.
