This presentation is intended to give you an idea of what changes in the structure of the nose may be accomplished with the intent that your expectations and desires may be met. Another way to express it is I hope you can visualize and learn to express what you don't like about your nose so I can discuss what may be done through surgery.

With few exceptions most people want their nose made smaller. Thank goodness for this, it is much harder to make a nose larger. The most common wishes are to take away the hump on the top of the nose, to make the tip of the nose less "boxy", to narrow the nose, and to narrow the nostrils. All of these may be accomplished through surgery. The biggest problem that a surgeon encounters is thick skin. There is nothing that can change the texture of the skin. Fortunately thick skin is not often a problem.

The nose is made up of bone, cartilage, and skin. Obviously we do not want any visible scars after surgery. I frequently use small incisions in the nasal columella to allow me to visualize the bone and cartilage so I can be more exact in surgery. This "open rhinoplasty" technique is commonly used and scars are nearly impossible to detect after surgery. The benefits of this approach in reducing the size of the nose far outweigh the small, inconspicuous scars. As to narrowing the nose at the nostrils the incisions are made inside the nostrils and again they are inconspicuous. All in all, in order to make a nose smaller something must be taken away. There will be shrinking of skin, controlled by dressings, where bone and cartilage are removed to make the skeletal base smaller. Thus, a reduction in size and a change in the shape of the nose.
The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. My outpatient surgical center is licensed and supervised by both state and federal government agencies. Our anesthesiologists are physicians who specialize in anesthesia. They are board certified and have extensive experience.

There is no substitute for personal consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. If you choose to see me I will spend the time necessary to enable you to let me know what you want and for to me to explain what is possible through surgery. If you desire please call and speak with my secretary or nurse to make an appointment.
